Hair Transplant Recovery Timeline: What to Expect Week by Week

Recovery is predictable, but the timeline surprises people — especially the shedding phase, when transplanted hairs fall out before they regrow. Knowing what is normal keeps you from panicking (or paying for an unnecessary 'fix').

Here is the typical arc for a healthy FUE or DHI procedure.

First 1–2 weeks

Expect mild swelling, redness, and tiny scabs around the grafts and donor area. Most clinics have you sleep semi-upright and avoid touching the area. Scabs typically clear within 10–14 days with gentle washing per your clinic's protocol.

Many patients return to non-strenuous work within 3–5 days, though the area is visibly healing.

Weeks 2–8: the shedding phase

Transplanted hairs commonly shed between weeks 2 and 6. This is expected — the follicle stays, the shaft falls. The scalp can look much as it did before surgery during this stretch.

Avoid strenuous exercise, swimming, saunas, and direct sun until your clinic clears you.

Months 3–12+: regrowth and final result

New growth usually begins around month 3–4, thickening steadily. By month 6–9 you see meaningful coverage; final density and texture settle at 12–18 months.

Judge results — and any before/after gallery — on that 12–18 month horizon, not early photos.

Frequently asked questions

When can I fly home after a hair transplant in Turkey?
Most clinics clear patients to fly 2–3 days after the procedure, once the first wash is done. Confirm timing with your clinic and keep the grafts protected during travel.
Is shedding after a transplant normal?
Yes. 'Shock loss' of the transplanted shafts in the first weeks is expected and does not mean the procedure failed. Regrowth typically starts around month 3–4.
