FUE vs DHI: Which Hair Transplant Technique Is Right for You?

FUE and DHI are the two techniques you'll hear about most when researching a hair transplant in Turkey. Clinics often market one as 'newer' or 'better', but the truth is more nuanced — and the surgeon's skill matters far more than the acronym.

Here's what each actually is, and how to decide.

What is FUE?

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) removes individual follicular units from the donor area (usually the back of the head) using a micro-punch. The surgeon then creates recipient channels and places the grafts.

It's the modern standard, leaves minimal scarring, and works for most patients.

What is DHI?

DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) uses a Choi implanter pen to create the channel and place the graft in one motion, without separate pre-made incisions.

It can allow denser, more controlled placement and is popular for hairlines, but it's slower and typically more expensive.

Which should you choose?

For most large sessions, well-executed FUE gives excellent results at a lower cost. DHI can be advantageous for precise hairline work or when avoiding shaving the recipient area.

The bigger questions: Does a licensed surgeon perform the critical steps? How many cases does the clinic run per day? Is pricing transparent? Those predict your outcome more than FUE vs DHI.

Frequently asked questions

Is DHI better than FUE?
Not inherently. DHI offers control for hairline density; FUE is excellent and more cost-effective for larger areas. Surgeon skill and clinic standards matter more than the technique name.
Which is less painful?
Both are done under local anesthetic and have similar recovery. DHI may avoid shaving the recipient zone, which some patients prefer.
